Sama Coffee Shop is a cozy spot nestled in the heart of downtown San Mateo that feels like a quiet retreat from the usual hustle. This coffee shop leans into a calm, peaceful atmosphere — ideal for anyone looking to settle in with a laptop or catch up with a friend over something a little different than your standard drip. The vibe is unhurried, with soft background music or sometimes just the buzz of hushed conversations, making it easy to focus or simply relax.

The menu reflects an interesting blend of Middle Eastern and contemporary coffee shop flavors, bringing unique items like Turkish coffee made on hot sand and a rose cardamom honey latte into the mix. These drinks carry a subtle complexity — fragrant spices and natural floral notes that stand out compared to run-of-the-mill lattes. If you’re into exploring beyond espresso drinks, the Arabian Gulf coffees, masala chai, and an assortment of teas offer a variety of warming options to savor.

Pastry-wise, there’s a small but thoughtful selection to nibble on. Items such as pistachio kadyif and cheese-filled pastries add a comforting touch, fitting well with the café’s gentle, inviting environment. The bakery treats won’t overwhelm but will pleasantly complement a slow morning or afternoon visit.

Locals often stop by to work quietly, thanks to the café’s deliberately subdued setting and comfortable window seating. The lack of a restroom can be a small drawback, but for shorter visits and coffee runs, this place works well. Parking nearby is usually manageable, especially if you arrive early or mid-morning on a weekday.

This is a spot for those who appreciate a slower pace with an elevated coffee experience — whether it’s enjoying a meticulously prepared Turkish coffee, chatting softly over a mango mint mojito mocktail, or simply taking a moment to breathe in the aromas of rose and cardamom mixing in the air. Sama Coffee Shop fits neatly into the fabric of San Mateo’s downtown, offering a subtle touch of Middle Eastern flair alongside the everyday coffee routine.

I’d give it a 4.5 stars. The atmosphere was really nice, quiet and comfy. The Turkish coffee and cappuccino were pretty good. Tried the rose milk cake, pistachio kadyif (I think that’s how it’s called) and chocolate “croissant”. They were all good, just not exceptional (yet). Plus points for the rose milk cake for actually tasting natural (it’s always a gamble).

Came here for brunch on a Sunday with a friend and had such a great experience! The staff were super friendly and cheerful — welcoming without being overbearing. The vibe was relaxed with great music in the background. The chai and baklava were delicious, but the real star was the cheese-filled pastry — absolutely heavenly. Perfectly warm, flaky, and satisfying. Found plenty of street parking with lots of shade. Definitely a cozy spot worth visiting in San Mateo. I’ll be back!

Really sweet cashier and delicious Rose cardamom honey latte. $8 and my friend got the Turkish coffee with anise. Solid place No toilet but everything else was great. Beautiful exterior design. No music in the cafe and nice quiet place for laptop work.

Extremely cute cafe in the heart of san mateo. Loved the pistachio came there. Can have it any number of times. The coffee was pretty good as well. I loved the seats by the window.

A beautiful little café with a warm, peaceful atmosphere. Arabic-style tea served in golden pots, delicate cups, and the aroma of spices in the air. They have Turkish delights and baklava — everything feels made with heart.

Beautiful coffee shop with a relaxed environment. The coffee was delicious and the pastries look amazing. There is not a restroom in the shop but there is one right around the corner with a code.
